Hi everyone!

This week was pretty crazy fun. I ran into this buddy Elder Hines from home and met a few relatives of friends! I met my dear friend Will’s brother and my dear friend Moira’s cousin. So funny how Utah feels sometimes! This week, I took a few language tests and I ended up doing pretty well on our teacher’s cumulative exam. We also got new mattresses! They’re so comfy. I wish we could’ve gotten them when we first got here!! We also went to the Provo City Center temple today (loooooooove it there) and ran into Sister Runia (First Counselor in our Young Women General Presidency) and we were all reminded of what an excellent talk “Your Repentance Doesn’t Burden Jesus Christ; It Brightens His Joy”  was in the April 2025 conference.

The temple endowment is so special to me. It reminds me that not only will we make mistakes on Earth, but because we make mistakes, we can experience even greater joy when we are relieved and forgiven of them. Just as Adam and Eve could not experience joy without sadness and good without evil, we cannot experience Jesus Christ without first asking for His atoning power.

Next Wednesday, we fly to Seattle for a two hour layover and then to Tokyo for another two hours and then finally to Kobe. How exciting!

I gave a talk (in Japanese) today! Here’s an English version of what I wrote before I translated it to Japanese:

A few weeks ago, a dear friend of mine had the question, ‘How do I forget myself and completely lose myself in the work of Jesus Christ?’ I thought to myself, what an excellent question. Especially as a missionary, but likewise at any time throughout mortality and eternity, losing yourself in the eternal work of Jesus Christ is the key to living a life centered in joy.

I reflected on his question for a bit, and I prayed for an answer. I suddenly received what I believe to be a crucial revelation for myself.

A lot of advice given today is around changing your actions. For example, if you want to be a better leader, you might focus on becoming a better speaker. If you want to become a better student, you might start using flashcards. If you want to get closer with your ward, you might focus on reaching out to them.

This works only to a point, however. People, naturally, can sense your character. They sense it in your Spirit, and to a lesser extent, your actions and words. These are band-aid solutions.

I have found in my own experience that when I focus on changing myself first, my actions change after naturally. Where am I lacking? I pray to God to find out and help lead me to bettering myself. When you lose yourself in the missionary work of Jesus Christ, it isn’t necessarily that you’re teaching more lessons, streeting better, and finding more friends. It is that you have let God change your life, and as a result, you reap the rewards externally of your internal change. You look forward to each day, and feel Jesus Christ and God with you, each day. You naturally become more effective as a missionary, and more importantly, you naturally become more of a disciple of Jesus Christ. That to me, is evidence of God’s Grace, being ‘divine means of help or strength, given through the bounteous mercy and love of Jesus Christ’ (Bible Dictionary). I have not seen Jesus Christ help me move a mountain, though I know He could. I have, however, seen His hand change the focus of my heart.

Since becoming a missionary, I have read my scriptures every day. In particular, I have loved rereading and thoroughly analyzing Colossians 3. You might have another chapter or verse that describes what it means to you to be a Saint. I’ve worked every day to internalize that scripture into my character and work towards becoming everything that scripture says from the inside. As I have striven to do so, I have felt the blessings of Christ more abundantly every day. My burden is lighter and I feel more confident in tackling the challenges of the day. I look forward to the day I can say with full honesty that I have reflected that scripture completely in my countenance!

I’ve always thought it made sense that Jesus Christ was a carpenter. When we come to Jesus Christ, he vows to turn our souls into a beautiful mansion. Even if we come to Him with what may look like a couple of sticks or even ash, His hand can transform us into our most perfect selves.

I testify of the power of the ability of Christ to help us become His disciples. I testify that following Jesus Christ has brought me true joy. I testify that He loves us all so much and wants to see us become the best we can be. In the name of Jesus Christ, I testify that these things are true. Amen.

PS: I spoke this talk in Japanese for one of our last classes in the MTC! Here it is below. If anyone is fluent in Japanese and wants to check over my grammar and make sure it makes sense, I’d love that lol! Most of it is Google Translated so I’m pretty confident it’s alright.

  1. Eli, I am so proud of you . You have learned so many important things so soon in your life . It took me 85 years to start to learn and to really believe that if I ATTEMPT to do everything just to please God and nobody else, I will become a better every thing else …. a better father, husband, friend, disciple …everything.

Hey Japan, watch out – here he comes💕

  2. You are amazing Elder Son. How blessed the people of Kobe will be to have you serve there for two years. Your spirit is contagious. You will change lives because of your faith and courage to stand for the right. Kathy Carter
